Warsaw, December 1945: French Red Cross Doctor Mathilde (Lou de Laage) finishes up treating the French survivors of the German camps when she meets a panicked Benedictine nun who begs Mathilde to follow her back to the convent - only to find a holy sister about to give birth, along with several more in advanced stages of pregnancy. The non-believer, Mathilde, enters the sisters’ private world as they fear the shame of exposure, the hostility of the occupying Soviet troops and local Polish communists and while facing an unprecedented crisis of faith, the nuns increasingly turn to Mathilde as their beliefs and traditions clash with harsh realities.
